Description A handsome ceramic stoneware storage jar from Korean Joseaon Dynasty (1392-1897) circa 15-16th century. The exterior surface of the pot was hand cut into nonagon planes, which were further decorated with underglaze white slip. The diamond patterns were pressed or stamped on the cut surface before the brush of white slip was applied. The resulted in a subtle contrast with the celadon glaze that covers the rest of the body. The clay used to make this pot is high in iron content thus the unglazed bottom rim displays a reddish color. The interior of the pot was darkly glazed, thus impermeable for storage, likely for liquor. The mouth has an inner rim to accommodate a lid cover, which would be made of wood and no long presents.
Kept with the piece is an invitation from Felice Fedder Oriental Art Inc which operated on Madison Ave, New York City at least until late 80s. Presumably it is the source of this piece.
Buncheong ware in Joseon was a distinguished ceramic style evolved from earlier celadon ware of Goryeo. It is characterized by a informal and earthy folk (Mingei) style. It found popularity in Japan when exported, being used for Chado for and appreciated for their wabi-sabi aesthetic. in Korea, it was replaced by white porcelain in late 16th century but in Japan it exerts a long lasting influence on the Mingei style ceramic.
For a similarly decorated bowl, see The Art of Korea: Highlights from the collection of San Francisco's Asian Art Museum. Page 114.
