A native of Sado Island off the coast of Niigata Prefecture in northeastern Honshu, Kosuge Chikudo taught himself basket-weaving by copying old Chinese pieces. He established his own workshop in 1945, specializing in plaiting with bamboo prepared using the masawari (radial splitting) technique, in contrast to the flat or tangential cutting customary elsewhere in Japan. Chikudo often combined several different plaiting styles in a single piece, as in this elaborately worked basket. -
