Large Chinese Huanghuali Wood Brush Pen Holder
-
Description
A large Huanghuali brush pen holder, an object prized among Chinese scholars for centuries in Ming and Qing dynasties. The current cylindrical form was made from an impressive block of Huanhuali wood (a type of precious rosewood found in Southern China), turned slightly slender at its waist and with a plug hole on the bottom. The surface exhibits beautiful wood grains with linear zigzag and rosettes patterns. some areas are heavily highlighted with feathering lines, hill silhouettes and several swirling "ghost faces". The patterns of the grains invoke poetic imaginations and are the most desirable feature of the collectible wood. The surface of the rim shows a moderate accumulation and crystallization. The base display patina from use and also some aged cracks. The wood plug can loosely stays in place but is not tightly fit, maybe a later addition or replacement. The patina and wear overall indicate that this was an authentic piece with a user's history. It weights over 11lbs and feels very heavy and extremely dense.
