Description | Naïve map of America, crayon or pastel on muslin, circa 1920-1930, with a myriad of interesting geographic and economic imagery: Naïve map of North America, drawn in crayon or pastel on thin muslin, circa 1920-1930, with a myriad of interesting geographic and economic imagery. In New England there is a church and a tall ship. Through the Midwest there are locomotives, cowboys, horses, and haystacks. In New York stands the state of liberty and off the Atlantic coast are steamships and a dirigible. In Florida there are orange groves. In Louisiana there are boats on the Mississippi and a large plantation with people picking cotton. In Texas is the Alamo with a line of soldiers and an American flag, a herd of cattle, and a hanger with biplanes. In Washington State there are salmon; everywhere in the oceans are birds and whales. In Southern California there are a mission and fruit trees. There are is a brewery in Minneapolis, early automobiles in Detroit, and sled dogs in Canada. In Mexico one can see a cockfight, a man with a poncho and sombrero and what appears to be a cigar, and a group of horses and riders lined up for an Escaramuza (a riding event at a Mexican rodeo). Cuba is visible with tobacco fields. There is a mariner's compass in the bottom left corner and around the perimeter is a decorative border of rolling hills, two of which are being plowed by Amish farmers. The childlike nature of the work, it's imagery and its size lend it a strong visual impact. The warm nature of the textile in general makes it an excellent piece of folk art for any wall, but this would be particularly nice in a child's room. Mounting: The map has been professionally stitch-mounted over a framework that folds in two. Measures: 60.5" x 58.75" x 1" deep. Condition: There is some foxing and staining throughout, but the overall condition is excellent. |
