Description This model of parian was one of the most popular in the mid-nineteeth century. In mythology, Clytie was a sea nymph, the daughter of Oceanus, who was changed into the plant heliotropium for her unrequited love of Helios, the sun-god. The original Greco Roman marble sculpture is in the Townley collection at the British Museum. It was reputed to have been Charles Townley’s favorite sculpture. The front of the socle is impressed: C.DELPECH. REDT. On the rear of the socle, the impression reads: ART UNION OF LONDON 1855.
