Mid-Century Folk Art Whale by Peter Allen, Stinson Beach, California
-
Description
Hand carved folk art whale is made from a single block of California clear heart beautifully grained redwood. Local California artist, Peter Allen, created it in the 1960’s to hang in the bar at his favorite ‘watering hole”, “The Sand Dollar Saloon”, located in Stinson Beach California (established in 1921 and recently closed). Stinson Beach is a popular ocean front, somewhat avant garde, artsy suburb, north of San Francisco, where Peter Allen and his artist cronies used to hang out. He died in 2004 leaving behind a legacy of artwork which is much sought after by American folk art collectors. Note the fine hand carved teeth and dorsal fin attached to the body of the whale.
The flat unfinished bottom of the whale (see image) attached to the wall, but it can be displayed in numerous positions as per the collector. My images, for the most part, show it resting on a table top. The whale is in near mint condition and measures 37″ long x 11″ x 9″. -
