'Sea Anemone' Sculpture (Lilac)
-
Description
From simple beechwood rods, German artist Pia Maria Raeder creates refined functional sculptures reminiscent of biomorphic forms. She has become globally known for her ’Sea Anemone’ collection that reflects the beauty found on the ocean floor. According to Pia Maria’s own words: "With my work, I try to create pieces which are as vibrant, unique and surprising as Nature."
Work by the artist is included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
Each the fruit of hundreds of working hours, her ‘Sea Anemone’ sculptures are handcrafted from thousands of beechwood rods that are cut, sanded and arranged one by one. More than 2,000 beech rods are necessary to produce this ‘Sea Anemone’ sculpture. The application of lilac lacquer on the rods transforms the wood and underlines its movements. Emancipated from its limits, the wood hence transformed into undulating living forms is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of life seems to animate these organic creations, like the echo of a nature that is not imitated but is rather harnessed and experienced.
Launched in 2016, the ‘Sea Anemone’ collection now includes twenty pieces, encompassing many typologies in which function and poetry fuse: side and coffee tables, wall and freestanding mirrors, armchairs, chandeliers, floor lamps and table lamps, vases. -
