Condition: Vertical hairline crack with reattached 1-in triangular break to front of base. Scattered loss (or.just unglazed surface) to lower perimeter of base. Scattered minor hairline firing cracks to verso. Scattered small concretions to glaze on back of upper body.
Provenance: an important Park Avenue collection.
Chinese Sancai glazed pottery figure of a Guardian is a protector of the deceased. This warrior dressed in armor with a fierce face and imposing position would accompany the dead into the next life. Only the wealthy could afford such sculptures at the time. The green, buff and chestnut sancai glaze is typical of these wares. -
