Torso of a Standing Buddha, Northern Qi to Sui Dynasty

Sold Sold
  • Description
Chinese late Northern Qi to early Sui Dynasties (570-600 AD) carved gray limestone torso of the Buddha. Appearing very much like ancient classical Western sculpture, the Buddha stands in a vertical posture and dressed in monastic robes (ka?aya) with right shoulder exposed and arms to the sides; the hands originally likely raised and lowered in abhaya and varada mudras. The garments elegantly carved with the kashaya fastened over the left shoulder in a loop; the soft folds of the outer robe, the sa?ghati, drape across his torso and rounded belly, with the underrobe, or antarvasa, showing gathered and hanging from underneath. Originally polychrome painted, traces of red and black paint are evident in creases. Bottom drilled and presented on a custom steel Stand with center post-mount; sculpture alone measures 20" high by 8" wide and 4.5" deep.

    Provenance: Virginia, USA, private collection.
