Description Two large Louis XIV style silvered bronze thirteen-light candelabra
French, 20th Century
Height 122cm, width 66cm, depth 66cm
These grand, Louis XIV style silvered bronze candelabra – which each hold thirteen lights and measure 122cm (48 inches) in height – will make stunning additions to an interior. The two emulate the elaborate solid silver furniture and decorative art that was commissioned in the 1660s by the French king Louis XIV to furnish the Château de Versailles.
Each candelabrum has thirteen scrolled, strapwork style light branches, which are bound together by foliage swags, and which terminate in foliate drip-pans and capitals. The lights develop from stems, decorated with fluting, scrolled foliage and sea monsters. Each candelabrum base features two putti – one of which blows into a conch shell – with fish tails, who sit together in a wooden boat. The boats are raised up on the tails of three stylised fish, which are set on triform bases.
