Eagle Pen Company designed this limited edition Washington & Blueskin fountain pen as a tribute to the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, George Washington. Part of a limited edition of 4 pens, the Washington & Blueskin fountain pen features a cap with a miniature painting by Lynn Peterson and a wooden pen body, hewn from actual horse chestnut tree planted by George Washington in 1794.
Lynn Peterson is an accomplished miniaturist painter. She works for upwards of eight hours on each cap painting, individually signing each numbered masterpiece. For this pen, Peterson was inspired by the connection between George Washington and his trusty warhorse. The painting shows Washington mounted on Blueskin, his Arabian horse, at the Battle of Trenton. The cap is further adorned with 24k gold painted accents.
Blueskin was one of Washington’s two primary mounts during the Revolutionary War. The horse was a half-Arabian, sired by the stallion "Ranger,” and a gift to Washington from Colonel Benjamin Tasker Dulany. He was Washington's pre-war foxhunting mount, known for a fiery temperament and the endurance for long cross-country gallops. During the war, Washington preferred the blue roan for marches and long travel. He was a smaller horse than Nelson, Washington’s other mount, but could still easily carry the six-foot-tall Washington.
Based on her original sketches and color palette, Eagle Pen Company crafted a wooden pen body hewn from the “Georgia Tree,” the last remaining of the thirteen horse-chestnut trees planted by George Washington in 1794. Planted on Fauquier Street in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, the thirteen trees were a representation of the thirteen original colonies. The tree was researched, documented, and named by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1924. In 2004, this beautiful tree, at 222 years old, succumbed to old age and was felled. It now serves as one of the last physical links to George Washington. The entire pen is sealed with a glassy lacquer, protecting the artwork and wood for generations to come.
