Description | A very rare example from the collection of Milton Celsnick of Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. The Fire Association was the first fire insurance organization organized out of the volunteer fire departments in America. Founded in 1817, 11 engine and fire hose companies from Philadelphia were the charter members. Beginning with no capital, the property of the associated fire companied was pledged. Seemingly the credit of the trustees was so good, policies were written during the first year of the company's charter (1820). The firemark adopted represented a fire plug with a section of hose attached to it. This rare example is cast in lead with the policy number visible. | ||||||||
