Description
An early firemark from the collection of Milton Celsnick of Penn's Landing, Philadelphia. This example is an early lead version issued just after the Mutual Assurance Company was founded. This second mutual fire insurance company was formed in Philadelphia, organized by former policyholders of The Philadelphia Contributionship. In 1781 The Contributionship decided not to insure any buildings with trees around it as it was felt they represented a fire hazard. The Mutual Assurance Company chose a firemark with a tree in full foliage and the company quickly became known as The Green Tree.
