Firemark of the Philadelphia Contributionship, circa 1776

Sold Sold
  • Description
In 1792 Benjamin Franklin and his fellow firefighters founded The Philadelphia Contributionship, the nation's oldest successful property insurance company. The company was founded as a mutual insurance company where the policyholders banded together to share the risk. Fire insurance provided a safety net for Philadelphians where the threat of fire damage to property was very real. The company adopted a firemark representing two pairs of hands grasped in support, earning the nickname Hand in Hand. From the Milton Celsnick Collection of Penn's Landing, Philadelphia.
