Antique Heriz Carpet, Persia
-
Description
The madder red field with unusual all-over design featuring bold poly chrome palmettos linked in a trellis by blue dragon-like motifs, all within a wide deep blue flower-head and leaf main border. This rug consist of central medallions surrounded by four other nor similar medallions that incorporate a garden design, the design on top of field is not symmetrical to the bottom of the field. The rug frame geometric design is similar to the one shown in the medallions. Heriz carpets are durable and hard-wearing and they can last for generations. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that these rugs were made in the area of Mount Sabalan which contains a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water of sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas. Heriz rug weavers often make them in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the field or they are all-over design. Such designs are traditional and often woven from memory. Heriz rugs are of coarse construction. The rugs range from 30 kpsi on the low end to 100–10 kpsi on the high end. It is rare to see a rug over 100 kpsi that would look like an authentic Heriz unless it is an antique silk Heriz.
