Description A fine Japanese Kuro Tomesode Kimono circa 1930s. It is overall black decorated with a landscape filled with pavilions amongst flowering trees and a resting royal cart. Kuro Tomesode is a dress for married woman for the most formal occasions, equivalent of the evening gowns in the west. The fine design was done with Yuzen, a painstaking resistant dye technique using rice starch. Yuzen was invented in the 17th century and used in traditional kimono making. The Yuzen created an amazing imagery on this piece, taking the full advantage of what the technique can achieve. On a gradual black background, the refined decoration depicts a forested landscape with pavilion, palanquin carts for the nobles, profuse and delicate banquets of peonies and chrysanthemums and crashing waves on the bottom. Two small Mon embroidered on the shoulder. A wonderful textile for the disconcerted collectors.
