Description Originating from Russia between 1880-1900, this antique transitional Soumak wool rug hosts a variety of meaningful symbols representing protection, worship, warding, and strength. Hand knotted in high quality wool with a pallet of rustic but bright red, blue, black, and beige colourways, the sole vertical symmetry emphasizes the field’s designs rich and varied assortment of geometric motifs including burdock (plants symbolizing protection and abundance), complemented by more prominent ram’s horns (symbolizing strength and masculinity) as well as lesser-employed infinite knots (symbolizing eternity and unity). The mirrored, wrapping borders frame the lighter colourways with darker, richer tones with a combination of flowers and monster’s feet, symbolizing the dragon in the guard border and playing into the field design’s overall tone of protection and strength.
