Description Originating from Russia in 1910, this antique transitional Soumak wool rug has a variety of protective motifs contributing to its symbolic tone of strength and warding. Hand knotted in high quality wool, the finely drawn all over field design employs both ornate geometric and gentle floral symbols including hooks (representing protection from the evil eye), quartered diamond Guls (medallions), fetter bukagi arrows (representing horse keeping), and more prominent ram’s horn symbols depicting strength, masculinity, and power. Emboldened by a combination of rustic red, rich blue, bright pink, gold, and black colourways, the equally tribal borders depict a variety of running water lines and other complementary symbols including the outermost black curves representing the dragon (or monster’s feet in the local vernacular) playing into protective and powerful overtones.
