Darning Sampler Made by Mary Ann King

Sold Sold
  • Description
    Wilmington Board School, Delaware

This darning sampler, made at the Wilmington Board School, reflects the influence of needlework from the Westtown School in Chester County, Pennsylvania. A related example is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The forerunner of the Wilmington Boarding School was founded in 1748 by members of the Wilmington Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers). It is now known as the Wilmington Friends School.

The maker, Mary Ann King, is a direct descendant of Pieter de Coninck II [Peter King] (1634–1695) and his wife Anna Calet, who emigrated from Flanders (the Dutch-speaking area of northern Belgium) and settled in New Castle County, Delaware, by 1680/81.
