Description
Pair of Christofle cut-glass and silvered bronze centrepieces
French, 19th Century
Height 24cm, width 63cm, depth 35cm
This exquisite pair were made by the French manufactory Christofle. Founded in 1830 by Charles Christofle, the firm was the first to introduce silver plating and electrolytic gilding to the French decorative arts market. These two centrepieces – identical in design – are a superb example of the fine work of the manufactory.
The pieces comprise a cut-glass bowl within a silvered bronze decorative base. The bowl sports a scallop edge, with etched fluting on the main body. The twin handles are formed of putti, who peer at the bird resting on their hand – a truly charming design. The putti rest on branches, which extend into the main foliate body of the base, which is replete with vines, leaves, and hanging fruit. On the front and reverse are further cherubs, who flank foliate cartouches inset with monograms. The entire composition is supported by four branch-form feet.
Contrasting clear glass with shining silvered bronze, this pair is a decorative triumph that would suit both contemporary and traditional interiors.
