English Majolica Sardine Trinket Box with Lid
-
Description
This rare, two-piece serving box with sardines as the handle is pleasing and unusual. The lid is decorated with three sardines on a bed of seaweed, while the sides of the box and the attached underliner also have a seaweed motif. This nautical theme is colored in random patches of dark and light green and beige and brown patches. Inside and under the lid is a buff color. The design reflects the Victorian interest in the natural world.
The box has a barely noticeable hairline on one corner, as seen in the last two closeup photographs. Antique Majolica-ware is often known for its small chips and hairlines, but the rarity of this box forgives the hairline in this instance. It is sturdy. The box can be used as a serving dish at the table, or as a trinket box on a dresser or shelf. -
