English Majolica Serving Tray with Basket, Leaves, and Stem Handles, Circa 1870
-
Description
This lovely Majolica platter is decorated as a cream-colored low basket with a mustard-colored rattan rim, and with brown banana-plant stems as handles. The basket is overlain with banana leaves in various shades of green. The underside is decorated in a brown-and-cream sponged technique. These elements are all hand-colored highlights on a molded body. There is a small "p"-like mark in dark brown enamel color on the bottom of the platter. The basket motif reflects the Victorian and Aesthetic Movement tastes of admiration for the rustic and elegant characteristics of Nature.
