Description
German porcelain topographical cup and saucer, the cup painted with a view of Munich, the saucer with a view of the Nymphenburg palace.
The overglaze "L S" to the bottom of each piece is probably the mark of an independent painter, called a hausmaler. In Germany, from the 17th through the 19th centuries, these artisans bought undecorated ceramics and painted them in their own studios. The quality of hausmalerei was often first rate, as seen here with these detailed renderings of Munich and Nymphenburg, probably copied from engravings. -
