Napoleon III period silvered and gilt bronze centrepiece garniture by Picard
French, c. 1860
Two-tier tazza: Height 56cm, diameter 26cm
Raised bowls: Height 16cm, diameter 20cm
Comprising a two-tier centrepiece and twin raised dishes, this garniture was crafted from cut glass and gilt and silvered bronze by Henri Picard, one of the most celebrated bronze workers during the French Second Empire.
The bronze throughout is both silvered and gilt, granting the bronze a wonderful, two-tone quality. The bronze is crafted in the eclectic Napoleon III style, and features flowing, scrolled forms as well as classicising masks and other motifs. The cut glass supported by the bronze is finely crafted, with delicate detailing to its surfaces.
The garniture is an exceptional example of mid-19th Century French craftsmanship. -
