Description
Empire silver gilt centerpiece. Made by Odiot in France, ca 1910. Classical kylix bowl on 3 cast caryatid supports in form of bare-bosomed maidens with outstretched wings terminating in massive paw mounted to tripartite base. Cast split-mounted side handles in form of snakes, heads resting on rim with beady eyes and closed jaws; leaf terminals. Frieze with gryphon-flanked columns and winged heads. Palmette, gadrooned, and imbricated leaf ornament.
A Belle Epoque homage to the insurgent and transient glory of the Napoleonic Empire a century before.
Fully marked including Mercury head fineness stamp (950), maker’s stamp, and no. 3345. Very good condition with nice toning.
