Tea pot: Height 19cm, width 20cm, depth 8cm
Milk jug: Height 10cm, width 11cm, depth 6cm

This fine and rare KPM porcelain tea and coffee set consists of six pieces: two cups and saucers, a milk jug, a sugar bowl with cover, a coffee pot with cover, and a teapot with cover. Each piece is exceptionally decorated, with a supreme level of skill, to give the impression that they have been made using the techniques of micromosaic and pietra dura. The fineness of the details exhibit a level of delicacy in porcelain manufacture and decoration that is up there with the finest works of porcelain ever made.

Each piece in the set is of octagonal shape, designed in an unusual style that combines the Neoclassical with Egyptian Revival. All the pieces are gilt profusely inside and out, and feature exceptionally crafted faux micro-mosaic designs as panels. These scenes depict ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian ruins, and are separated by octagonal cartouches depicting lyres against a turquoise ground. There are further faux pietra dura floral cartouches around the rim of some of the pieces, against a red ground. Many of the panels are inspired by engravings of Roman ruins in 'A select collection of views and ruins in Rome and its vicinity: Recently executed from drawings made upon the spot' (1815), published by J. Merigot.

This unusual style draws on the emerging Neoclassical style in the early 19th Century, which pushed back against the ornate Rococo style. It is also inspired by the revival of Italian micro-mosaics, particularly through tourists bringing back souvenirs from travels during this time. The Egyptian influence may also be attributed to the revival in this culture and aesthetic design in early 19th Century France, following an expedition by Napoleon to Egypt in 1798.

Each piece in the set is marked to the underside for KPM.
