Frame Antique Chinese Embroidered Robe Qing Dynasty

Sold Sold
  • Description
A woman's coat made of blue woven brocade with wide sleeves from China late Qing Dynasty (circa mid to late 19th century), professionally mounted and presented on blue linen board and framed as a beautiful piece of textile art. The coat features white silk bands on wide sleeves with peony blossom embroidery. The neck and skirt bands are quite unique in their designs. Unlike most subject matter for lady's robe that centered on flowers, birds or butterfly etc, the neck bands features embroidery of archaic engraving patterns that are normally found on the surface of ancient bronze and associated with antiquity and classic virtue. The border band that runs along the front and lower edge is even more interesting. They showcases very fine embroidery of scholarly objects such as stacks of books, bundles of scrolls, incense pouches and Lingzi mushrooms. These were traditionally males' objects that belong to their study. The fact that the body of the robe was left blank and undecorated also adds to the intrigue of this robe. It suggests something rather unusual about the owner of this piece. Instead of adhering to the feminine symbols that were the norm and expected of the society, the robe perhaps carries a subtle message to reveal the character of its female owner, that she was educated, learned and cultured; instead of flowers and birds, that she preferred more literary pursuits.
Professionally and artistically displayed in a giltwood frame. One of the pair robes displayed in matching frames. it is a great dialogue piece for any bespoken interior.
