Pair of Framed Chinese Antique Embroidery Panels

Sold Sold
  • Description
A pair of gorgeous Chinese silk embroidery panels circa 19th century late Qing Dynasty beautifully displayed in giltwood frames with mirror border and fabric accents. The embroidery work was done with tremendous skill and possibly from a studio contracted by the court. On a peach and blue background, white, blue and green silk threads of various shade were used to create dense design motifs such as large peony blossom, butterfly longevity peach and bat with phoenix-like tails, all symbols of prosperity and luck. A wide range of stitches were used for the work including long and short satin, couching and chain stitches, but what is most prominently used on the pieces and also considered most difficult, is the forbidden stitches. This rendered the work very fine with a wonderful textured quality.
They are framed in elegant frame with mirror border panels and giltwood frame and retain the original brass decorative hooks in the Chinoiseries style.
