Description Maria Martinez is considered the matriarch of contemporary pottery from the Pueblo of San Ildefonso. She and her husband Julian began to make black pottery at the pueblo in the early years of the 20th century. Later, under pressure from the Anglo world, they added signatures to their pottery. The hallmarks indicated who made the pot. Because of market pressures, they had to modify the signatures over the years, which helps us identify not only who made the pot but also the likely years in which the pot was made.

This pot has the signature “Marie” which was usually used with the pots made solely by Maria from 1923-mid 1930s. During the same years, when the pot was decorated in matte paint, it was likely painted by Julian Martinez. Every once in a while, we see a pot that has “Marie” as a signature even though it was painted by Julian. This was likely the result of an inattentive moment while Maria was signing a group of pottery that she made.

These dates are fairly early, during the time that Maria and Julian were perfecting the technique of making black pottery. The size and shape of this jar, along with the fine cross-hatched design, are particularly nice.
