Description 18th century Chinese reverse glass painting of a young girl holding a pair of birds. Original frame and backing.

There are many Chinese reverse mirror paintings in existence - especially ones from the turn-of-the-century - however, this is a certainly a category where the older they are the better they are. We believe this particular piece was made for the European market, judging from the hairstyle and jewelry that would have been popular at this time in France. We love the of combination of Asian and European influences, and the dream-like quality of the subject. It’s a hauntingly beautiful piece.
