Civil War Cavalry Officers Saddle Pad
US ARMY
This wonderful and extremely rare Civil War period shabraque, or saddle blanket is made for either a McClellan or Whitman type saddle, in navy blue wool with piping around the edges. The underside is a heavy cloth, with cotton batting filling, approximately 48 x 32”.
Civil War saddle blankets / saddle pads are seldom seen due to the heavy use they had during the war. Most soldiers had no reason to save them. And as they were worn out the military would just discard them. For this pad to have been saved by the soldier and passed down thru his family all these years since the war there must have been significance to it. Either the owner was somewhat famous, or the pad was at an important event such as a significant battle. In any case it’s a rare find for a civil war military collector.
As you can see the aged condition of this piece is why most did not survive the war as they were heavily used every day.
Very rare piece of a original Civil War relic.
The ones you find in good condition spent the war in a warehouse and was sold after the war as surplus.
Framed so you can see the front and back side.
You would pay $1,500++ just for the framing
