Chez Panisse Birthday Celebration: Signed Limited Ed. Goines Graphic Art Poster

$ 975
  • Description
    This original framed graphic art lithographic poster entitled "Chez Panisse Cafe & Restaurant Seventeenth Birthday" was created by David Lance Goines in 1988 in his Berkeley studio. The poster was printed in 14 colors in an edition of 839. This one is a limited edition, hand signed and numbered, 68/300, in pencil by the artist in the lower right. The poster was created to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the opening of the famous Berkeley gourmet restaurant, Chez Panisse, by its iconic founder Alice Waters, who was and presumably is still a friend of the artist. Goines' name and 1988, the year of the poster's creation, are printed to the lower left of the little girl. It depicts a likeness of Alice Waters, the famous chef herself, as a little girl of 18 months. It is based on a photo taken by her mother, who had dressed Alice as a salad for a school play.

    This original limited edition signed poster measures 24" high and 17.38" wide. The print is in excellent condition.

    David Lance Goines (1945-) is an American graphic artist, calligrapher, typographer, printing entrepreneur, and author. His work is held by many museums and institutions, including: The Smithsonian Institution's American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Louvre in Paris and The Library of Congress.

    After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, Goines started his career as a printer’s apprentice. He soon founded the Saint Hieronymous Press in Berkeley, where he still works. He has created many advertising posters, but as a political activist, he has also designed posters in support of social causes and organizations. Goines is involved in all phases of the production of his graphic arts, from the design and production of ink colors to the final printing process. Goines’s illustrative graphic approach incorporates some of the features of the famous 19th and early 20th century graphic artists, with his own unique and instantly recognizable style.
