Description
The exceptional mural contains a giant 4’- 4-3/4” soft-shell turtle Axestemys byssinus. This is among the best turtles we have ever found. The fossil is extremely dark against a light matrix stone adding to the beautiful graphic nature of the fossil. The fossils age is early Eocene (52 million years old).
The mural measures 73” tall x 55” wide x 2-1/2” deep (framed). It is framed in a handmade Wenge wood frame, backed in wood with two-part Alder wood French cleat on the back for easy hanging.
Fossil turtles from the Green River Formation are extremely rare. They are among the most sought-after of all fossils due to their size, beauty, and rarity. This specimen was discovered in the upper layers of the Green River formation of southwestern Wyoming. The specimen includes all of the limbs and a beautifully articulated shell. Note: on the right side of the shell, a plastron (lower shell) is emerging from the stone.
The fossil record of trionychids extends at least as far back as the Late Cretaceous (70 million years) in North America
During the early Eocene, gigantism in turtles was likely caused by a warm, subtropical environment, which allowed for “cold-blooded” animals to grow quite large.
