Both signed and dated; H.L. Engle, ’21.

This rare pair of impressionist landscapes is among Engle’s best works known.

One painting is inscribed on verso; The Hidden Valley 34th Annual American Ex. ’21 Art Institute. The other retains the original label(s), The Illinois Products Exposition.

Harry Engle was well respected among his peers as a talented landscape painter. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and exhibiting at many Expositions he organized the Chicago Galleries Association. Engle later became director of the organization and continued writing articles covering the contemporary art scene in Chicago.
