Description Oil on Canvas "Cow at a Water Trough," Henry Walcott Boss
Hudson River School, Dated: 1878. This bucolic scene is signed "Boss 78" in the lower right corner and has a plaque on the frame with the name "Boss". The landscape with cows appears to be in its original frame.
Henry Wolcott Boss (1820-1916) of Binghamton, NY was a technically skilled artist who is most noted for painting in the mid-19th Century Hudson River School style. His landscape paintings depict romanticized bucolic views of the Hudson River Valley and nearby mountain ranges, the Catskills, Berkshires, White Mountains, etc. He was also a skilled artist in portraiture, genre, seascapes and still life’s. He is referenced as "H. Wolcott Boss" when two of his paintings are listed in the exhibition records of the National Academy of Design in 1878, the year this painting is dated.
