The Drunkenness of Noah

Price Upon Request
  • Description
The canvas tells a story from the bible book Genesis. Noah fell asleep in his vineyard after a day of hard work. At that moment, he was drunk and naked. His son Cham found him in that condition and quickly went to his brothers. Sem and Japheth took a blanket and covered their father's nakedness. In the painting, we see the two brothers and their sleeping father. The canvas reprises a famous composition by Jacopo da Empoli's Italian artist, also named Jacopo Chimenti (Empoli, 1551 – Florence, 1640). The original work of Jacopo Chimenti is painted on copper and is located at the Uffizi Gallery (https://www.meisterdrucke.uk/fine-art-prints/Jacopo-Chimenti-Empoli/156407/The-Drunkenness-of-Noah-(oil-on-copper).html). It forms a pendant to a painting depicting the Sacrifice of Isaac.

These small-format works are said to date from the 1590s. The painter of the 'Spectandum version' faithfully reproduced the composition but added his own accents. For example, he increased the dramatic expression of the brother's faces. As a result, they seem more affected by the incident. Besides some changes to the clothing, the copyist also omitted the wreaths of grapevines on the heads of Sem and Japheth. It is also striking that the colours of the 'Spectandum version' are less fresh and varied. Pollution over the years may be at play here. Several versions of the work are known. One of them is preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (https://www.mfab.hu/artworks/the-drunkenness-of-noah/). Two others were sold at auctions: (http://www.artnet.com/artists/jacopo-da-empoli-chimenti/the-drunkeness-of-noah-sM7_jo8zK94OLptSnBFxRQ2 and https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/jacopo-chimenti-detto-jacopo-da-empoli-firenze-107-c-224w3574u1)
