    Signed top left corner in charcoal
    Excellent Condition- minor wear consistent with age and history.

    Came from a portfolio owned by artist John Bowers. John Bowers studied art at UC Berkeley under Margaret Peterson. His personal collection included works by Jay De Feo and Roland Petersen.

    September 9, 1921 - January 30, 2017

    John was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree by the University of California, at Berkeley, where he was a member of the tennis team.
    He served as a Marine Corps pilot in World War II and the conflict in Korea. Most of his service was in the South Pacific. He was in the Marine Corps reserves after Korea and attained the rank of full Colonel before his retirement.
    As a civilian, he was a flight inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration. This involved in-flight evaluation of commercial airline pilots.
    He and his wife, Vivian, who predeceased him, lived in Millbrae. John was a past president of the local American Association of Retired Persons, Past President of Native Sons of the Golden West, and a Grand Sir for Sons in Retirement. He was a long time member of Millbrae Lions' Club. He also was an active member of the Millbrae Historical Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as other organizations and activities. In 1994, he was named Millbrae's "Man of the Year." John's main hobby was the study and collection of Native American woven baskets. He and Vivian also were avid about camping and stream fishing.
    They met at Modesto Junior College after his service in World War II, were married in Modesto and lived in Berkeley and later moved to Millbrae.
