  • Description
Oil on canvas painting by prominent British landscape painter Robert Freebairn (signed lower left) depicting a dramatized view of Dolbadarn Castle rising above lake Llyn Peris with Mount Snowdon in the background, circa 1795. Canvas measures 36" by 28".

Robert Freebairn (London 1764-1808) was the son of a London chemist of Scottish descent and is reputed to have been a pupil of Richard Wilson before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1782. He was later apprenticed to Philip Reinagle from 1782-1785, and his first exhibited picture at the Royal Academy was sent from Reinagle's studio in Great Castle Street, Cavendish Square, London in 1782. He is recorded as travelling to Italy circa 1786 where he was to see the work of Jacob More (circa 1740-1793), the Scottish painter of classical landscapes influenced by Claude and Poussin. He is recorded as being in Rome from Easter 1787, living in the Via Babuino. Later in 1790 he is listed in Rome as a landscape painter living in the Casa di Battoni near the Strada Condotta, where Whaley Armitage on visiting his studio in March 1791 thought his landscapes equal to any of de Loutherbourg's. During his time in Rome, he sent Roman landscape views to London for exhibition at the Academy between 1789-1791; returning from Rome in March 1791. When in Italy he was patronized by Lord Clive, 1st Earl of Powis, and on his return to England by Lord Suffolk, John Penn of Stoke, and others. His compositions were noted for their elegance and enabled him to secure sufficient patronage and commissions for his pictures, most of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1782-1804 and at the British Institute between 1806 and 1808 and posthumously between 1809 and 1813.
