Description The 18th century painting shows a scene after the hunt. The Blenheim Spaniel stands proudly next to the poultry he has collected. The artist may
have borrowed the dog from a print after a design by the 17th century painter Johan le Ducq from the Hague. Scenes after the hunt, with hunting trophies on display, have their precursors in 17th-century still life paintings. There, shot hares, ducks,
pheasants etc. were lavishly displayed on a beautifully set table. This genre of painting allowed the artist to show his skills in the representation of various textures. The hunting still-lives often decorated the townhouses of wealthy persons. After all, hunting referred to a pastime of the privileged in society. Paintings with trophies of the hunt remained popular during the 19th century.
