Description Signed and dated (on back): A. E. Gallatin / Dec. 1938.

An influential patron, collector, and writer, Gallatin was also an abstract painter. His Gallery of Living Art at New York University on Washington Square housed an important collection of modern American and French painting and provided a foothold for abstract art in America. Gallatin’s devotion to vanguard art of the twentieth century resonated in his own work. His style initially evolved out of Cubism’s analytic and synthetic phases, particularly in his treatment of overlapping geometric forms set within planar spaces. As his career evolved, Gallatin began to simplify his work, reducing his pictures to simple geometric forms set amid broad color regions. He considered his oeuvre an extended series of ideas, and correspondingly he often sequentially numbered each canvas on the back and inscribed them with the month and year of its completion, as is this case with this work.

In "Untitled," a painting from the artist’s mature phase, Gallatin has pushed his way entirely toward abstraction. In its formal purity it resembles the works of Ozenfant and Jeanneret; however, unlike their works, it does not reference recognizable objects. The composition, minimally constructed of a few interlocking geometrical color regions, is simple and elegant, reflecting the ideas that Gallatin began to assimilate in his later career.
