Description Very striking, large-scale oil painting on canvas laid down on Masonite with gilt background depicting Buddha in a seated position on a giant lotus flower. The flower represents a symbol of fortune, meaning rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment. The painting is believed to be of Bhaajyaguru, the Buddha of healing and medicine, commonly referred to as the "Medicine Buddha". A very unique painting, artist unknown, dating from the early 20th century, it features many symbols expressing the continuous energy of cosmic order. The hand lowered with the palm facing outward is the gesture of bestowing blessings or of giving charity. There is a dharmachakra painted at the waistline which is connected in a way to the jewelry or garment Buddha wears, a symbol of Theravada Buddhism. He is also depicted wearing a five points crown or five protrusions crown signifying that this Buddha holds the wisdom of all five Dhyani Buddhas, meditation deities. Presented in a painted and gilt frame. Unframed size 52.25 x 69.
