Description
Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and lived there throughout his life. Lewis was one of the most popular landscape painters of Philadelphia during the late 19th century. He studied with artist Paul Weber from 1850 to 1855 and used watercolors to capture marine and river scenes along the eastern coast. He exhibited extensively during his career, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (1854-1869, 1876-1891), the National Academy of Design (1860), the Brooklyn Art Association (1862-1870, 1881-1883), the Boston Athenaeum, and the Boston Art Club (1881-1883). Lewis’s paintings are found in museums, galleries, and private collections throughout the USA, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, PA; the United States Department of State; Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME; the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, MA; Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland, CA; and the Bostonian Society in Boston, MA. Lewis was also an avid collector of fine art, furniture and china.
