Éduoard Cortès (1882 – 1969)

Édouard Cortès was born in Lagny, France in 1882 into a family of artists and artisans. His grandfather, Andre Cortès, was a renowned stained glass artisan and his father, Antonio Cortès, was a Spanish Court painter. From an early age, Éduoard exhibited great artistic skill and began working with his father and older brother in the family studio.

Before receiving formal training at the National French Art School in Paris, Cortès’s work was included in a national exhibition with the Société des Artistes Français at the age of 16. From this first exhibition, Cortès already established himself as a renowned artist among the Paris artist community. During the turn of the century, Cortès began to paint the Parisian scenes that he would become most known for throughout his career.

Cortès continued to paint images of Paris after his family moved back to Lagny in the mid-1920s, where he also started to paint the country life around him. In Lagney, he was an active member and the first president of the Union des Beaux-Arts de Lagny and exhibited with the group from 1927 until the late 1930s.

Cortès received many awards and his work was included in many distinguished salons in Paris, including the Salon d’Automne, Salon d’Hiver, Salon de la Société Nationale de l’Horticulture, and the Salon des Indépendants.
