Description | Noted Southern California Impressionist Elmer Wachtel is best known for his sweeping early 20th century plein-air landscapes. Painted primarily in earth tones juxtaposed with brilliant blue and green highlights,Wachtel emphasized the rendition of natural light and atmospheric effects. "Misty Sunlight, Topanga" features a beautiful, balanced composition with multiple visually interesting elements. This work, formerly in the collection of the Laguna Art Museum, exemplifies the artist's exploration of the play of sunlight on the water, hillsides, and distant mountains. These elements, along with the path in the foreground, gradually lead the viewer's eye into this iconic Southern California location. The view shows Topanga Canyon in its pure, natural state as it existed prior to the eventual construction of the Los Angeles area's sprawling suburbs and housing developments. |
