Description
A large floral still life painting by Eugene Claude, 1884
French, 1841-1922
Frame: height 119cm, width 145.5cm, depth 11cm
Canvas: height 81cm, width 106cm, depth 2cm
Beautifully depicting a colourful assortment of chrysanthemums in front of a wicker basket on a stone ledge, this fine still life painting was executed in the late nineteenth century by the French artist Eugene Claude. With a simple yet pleasing composition, the flowers move through shades of white and pink to yellow and red as the frame recedes, with the vibrant, brightly illuminated petals, painted with great finesse and impressionistic flair, contrasting with the harsh, stony greys of the backdrop. Creating a beautiful and decorative work of art, the light, expressive touch of the artist is on full display; it is mounted in a suitably ornate giltwood frame.
Executed in oil-on-canvas, and mounted in a beautiful carved giltwood frame. It is signed and dated to the lower left 'Eug. Claude / 1884.'
