Description Soot and spray-paint diptych painting on hardboard, by Evan Ishmael

Evan Ishmael’s early experience with woodworking and power tools has played a role in his explorative mixed media paintings. Although he trained in furniture design, his interest in modern sculpture rather than an emphasis on utility motivated his transition to fine art. While he now works mostly on canvas and board, Ishmael still approaches his process in more three-dimensional terms, considering the compositions of his soot forms as low-relief sculptures. His current project involves discovering new ways of fusing the smoky nature of soot and vibrant color fields of spray paint within one canvas. This unique pairing has held the artist’s creative curiosity for many years, and he is constantly inventing variations on this theme. Ishmael draws inspiration from the elegant minimalism of Sol Lewitt and the monumentality of Rothko, producing paintings that are simple in composition yet dense in form. His work has been shown in galleries and exhibitions across the country, including the Jackson Junge Gallery and Las Manos Gallery in Chicago, IL; Gamut Gallery and Ruckus Art shop in Minneapolis; the 2014 Arrowhead Biennial in Duluth, MN; and featured with Bicycle Fine Art at the New York Design Center in 2017 and 2018. He has also received numerous commercial establishments and advertising in his home city of Minneapolis.
