Description A wonderfully painted oil of the Brandywine School from the early twentieth century. The scene depicts Father Hennepin just before his capture by a Sioux war party on the Mississippi River, in present day Minnesota. Father Hennepin holds up a red peace pipe following an arrow shot by the Sioux tribe which penetrated the bow of the canoe. The Franciscan missionary was captured and lived among the Sioux for several months before his release was negotiated by Frenchman Daniel Greysolon.
