Orientalist oil painting of the Alcázar of Seville by Hidalgo

$ 28,000
  • Description
    Orientalist oil painting of the Alcázar of Seville by Hidalgo
    Spanish, Early 20th Century
    Canvas: Height 61cm, width 45cm
    Frame: Height 81cm, width 66.5cm, depth 6cm

    Superbly painted by the Spanish painter Fernando Liger Hidalgo (1880-1945), this oil on canvas depicts a courtyard of the Palace of King Peter, part of the infamous Alcázar of Seville.

    The artist beautifully portrayed the Islamic-inspired architecture of the place. The vibrant colours paired with exceptional attention to detail make the painting seem as if it is a photograph. Paintings of this type were purchased by travellers to commemorate their adventures, therefore Hidalgo’s realistic depiction would have been met with great enthusiasm.  Geometric tiles applied around the buildings are rendered in shades of green, blue, and brown. The walls of the palace are ornately painted in traditional Islamic designs of various colours with shades of orange, red, and cream predominating. In the middle of the courtyard stands a plant pot next to a small fountain, almost appearing like a water hole in a desert. Carelessly placed next to it is a long rug, of similar patterns as the rest of the surroundings on which lies a plush, red cushion with gold tassels.

    The buildings of the Palace of King Peter, also known as Peter the Cruel, are designed in the Mudéjar style, especially popular between the 13th and 16th centuries. The Palace was built between 1364 and 1366 by Arab and Berber craftsmen as King Peter wanted to celebrate the Muslims’ architectural legacy.

    Hidalgo’s painting is framed in a superbly carved giltwood frame. It is signed 'F. Liger Hidalgo / Sevilla' in the lower right.
    At Sotheby’s London on 25th April 2013, an almost identical painting by Tomas Acaves (lot 67) sold for £27,940.
