Born in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, Frank Millet was a respected teacher, and an academic painter and muralist known for historical genre scenes. In 1871 Millet entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp. He then studied painting in Rome and Venice and returned to the United States in 1875 to become a correspondent for the “Advertiser” at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition where he exhibited. In 1876 Millet returned to Boston and became one of the founders of the Boston Museum School of Art along with John La Farge and William Morris Hunt

In 1884, Millet bought and renovated the 14th century Abot’s Grange Mansion where he hosted a small group of artists, including John Singer Sargent and Edwin Austin Abbey. Many of his works were painted depicting the Great Hall at Abot’s Grange, including The Unconverted, as well as his most famous piece, Between Two Fires which currently hangs in the Tate Museum in London.
