    George Hyde Pownall (British/Australian, 1876 - 1932) A London street scene depicting The Gaiety Theatre. Oil on panel, signed lower right and titled en verso, "The Sacred Lamp of Burlesque". Image Size: 6" high x 9" wide. Framed:

    Part of the West End in London, The Gaiety Theatre was located on Aldwych at the eastern end of the Strand. The theatre suffered extensive bomb damage during the Second World War and stood empty until it was demolished in 1956.
